Happy Endings too

Bruno

It had to be a hound.  Preferably a tri-color hound.  This was the dog to be a companion and to take walks with my husband.  I persuaded Hal to visit the Humane Society because they had a beagle.  The beagle was on a home visit with his new family.  And there was Buster, young, eager, beautiful and BIG!  We fell in love and took him home to see what our elderly cat would think.  Fourteen months later the cat still rules.  A radio fence allows the renamed Bruno full roaming access to our property.  This month we have had our eleven year old twin grandsons with us.  We have trained Bruno to leave his area to swim, which was no easy feat. He loves the water and his boys. He's a great dog.  Nancy Harpfer

A little over a year ago I wanted to adopt a kitten.  After speaking with my hubby, who agreed, I visited our Alcona Humane Society.  I walked through both rooms full of cats and kittens, playing with all of them, before deciding on a tiger female kitten, who had a feral mother that was actually biting her own litter!  That kitten was actually crawling up the cage trying to get to me and away from her mom.  (The mom was removed from the cage)  When I picked her up, an immediate purr vibrated from her.  That is the exact moment we "bonded".  Her purr is loud, but so very happy.  It vibrates into my body and makes me happy too, even when times are difficult.

After deciding on the tiger kitten, which I named Kallie, I was leaving the room with her, when I noticed a butterscotch colored kitten in a cage by himself, looking lonely.  I reached into his cage, and he eagerly came to me for loving, and was purring before we even touched.  Now, I was torn, because he won my heart too!

I checked with Jo Tanner, the coordinator and found that he could not be adopted for a week, since he had just arrived, and someone may pick him up.  I asked her to let me know in a week if nobody claimed him, which she agreed to do.

After filling out adoption papers, and paying the necessary fees, Kallie was mine!  Off we both went to purchase kitten food, and litter, and then home.  Kallie purred all during the drive, and into her new house.  I put her in my hubby's lap where she promptly went to sleep, and prepared her litter box, and food and water dishes.  When she woke up, I showed them to her, and not one accident has ever occurred on our carpets or floor.

She investigated every inch of the house, seeking out hiding places, and places to get into things.  Her favorite bed became a Kleenex box I kept on the table next to where I sat.  She would curl up there, and nap, or poke her paws out to touch or play.  Her favorite toy became a shoe lace with a tiny fur ball on the end, which she would chase until her heart was thumping.  She actually figured out how to drag it to us when she wanted to play!  Her second favorite thing is water, in the toilet, in the sinks, in the tub, or shower.  She loves it!

A week went by and Jo called to tell me the kitten was adoptable, so off to the shelter once again to pick up our new pet, Pistol!  When he arrived at our house, he met Kallie, and they have been best of friends ever since.  Kallie taught him to sleep in the Kleenex box with her.....imagine, two kittens in a Kleenex box curled up fast asleep!

Kallie became the wiser of the two kittens by letting Pistol explore new things to see if they were safe, while she watched him.  He was the one who fell on the floor trying to jump from a chair to the mantle, or trying to jump from the table to the top of the refrigerator.  They both attempted to jump up and catch the ceiling fans while they were running!  They practice wrestling with each other, stalking shadows, and generally having fun, which gives us so many laughs.

During all their antics they have given us unconditional love.  Love that flows from their purrs that flows through our bodies, and makes us feel good too.  Who needs a psychiatrist for anxiety or high blood pressure, the cats take care of that and are so much cheaper!

Thanks to whoever brought those cats to the Alcona Humane Society.  You have made two people and two cats very happy.
